OUR STORY
Haygood Memorial is…
Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church is a welcoming congregation in the heart of Atlanta’s Morningside neighborhood. Our mission is simple: to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
We emphasize the grace of God and welcome all people from every walk of life. Whether you’re seeking a place to grow in faith, raise your children in the church, or serve the community, you are welcome here. As Jesus said, “Let the children come” (Matthew 19:14), and we especially strive to make children and youth feel at home.
Our Story
Haygood began in 1926, when Druid Hills Methodist Episcopal Church, South, planted a new congregation named for siblings Bishop Atticus Greene Haygood and Laura Askew Haygood.
Bishop Atticus Haygood was president of Emory University and later a bishop in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
Laura Askew Haygood was a missionary to China and a pioneering educator. She championed equal education for women, organized mission societies to care for the poor, and founded an industrial school in Atlanta that trained people in practical job skills.
Their legacy of education, advocacy, and mission is still alive at Haygood today. We serve the next generation through our Weekday Children’s Ministries, recreation programs, and weekly opportunities for children and youth to grow in faith.
